I managed to snag a really sweet deal on that Shrockworks Stubby Winch Bumper.  A member of the local 4wd club was trading in his Rubicon and didn’t want the dealer to screw him anymore than he already was.  $200 cash and my old stock bumper made it mine and I mounted it that evening after work.  Looks great and already has been tested a few times. Very sturdy, well made and best of all: “Made in the USA”.

Better Tunes

I finished installing the Boston Acoustic SL60 components I had lying around today.  I started yesterday but had to stop due to getting the tires mounted.  All I can say if these things were worth every penny.  I currently have them running off the stock radio and they sound really good (tons better than the stock components.)  Can’t wait to hear them on the GT-50 amp I have yet to install.  Probably going to bi-amp the SL60s (front channel to tweets, rear channel to mids) and run that G5 10″ sub off the 5th class D channel at 2 ohms.  Should sound amazing.

New Tires Installed

The stock Goodyear Wrangler ST tires are off and some BFG Mud Terrain KM2 tires are on.  The new size is 255/85-16 and measures out to about 4 inches larger than the stock ones.  Definitely makes a difference in the look and overall feel of the Jeep.  The ride is great for them being a mud tire.  Very little noise, even at 60mph with the top down.  I have them at 30psi and so far there isn’t a big difference is ride quality either.  You do feel a bit of rumble at slow speeds in parking lots, but that’s it.

First mod done

The first mod to my JK is done!  I’ve seen these stickers before on TJs and other Wranglers from time to time and always found them hilarious, so I had to.  It now sports a nice white sticker saying:

For those who are asking, it’s supposed to be upside down.  For those who can’t read upside down, it says: “If you can read this ROLL ME OVER!”

Finally bought a Jeep!

It only took me 15 years or so to do, but I finally bought a Jeep Wrangler.  Purchased new on 02.19.2010 from Brian Harris Jeep in Baton Rouge.  I sold my 2007 Honda Accord earlier in the week and planned on running the Blazer for a few months until I paid off some bills.  However the Blazer seems to have some issues creeping up, partly from age and partly from neglect during the past 3 years.  It might even need a new transmission and I don’t have the cash lying around to do that, so that coupled with a really good deal on the JK made the purchase decision for me.

I was actually looking at a used 2007 model that had 49K miles, but the new one was similarly equipped (only missing the 17″ tire group, which I planned on changing anyway) and a mere $1500 more. Coupled with the fact that no one has beat this one before (I’ve put all but 1 or 2 miles on it) and the way better interest rate on the “new car” loan, it was an easy choice.

I purposedly bought the base model (only options: $50 axle upgrade, $895 AC) expecting to make some major upgrades in the near future.

Bye bye Honda

Well the lady from Little Rock just picked up the Accord and it’s on it’s way to a new home.  While I enjoyed the car, especially the performance aspect of it, it just didn’t make sense to keep it any longer.  As of the sale date I only had 14,620 or so miles on it and a large chunk of those (almost 3500) were put on a month or two after buying it during my trip home for x-mass of ’07.  I bought it new on October 21, 2007.  As I really haven’t driven home since—it’s cheaper to fly, even with a car getting 32MPG on the highway—I really didn’t save much with it.  Kind of wishing I had bought that yellow ’07 Wrangler I looked at before the Accord now.

2007 Honda Accord EX-L, V6 6-speed manual.  Bought new on Oct 21 of 2007.  Don't need the Blazer anymore, so I'll either sell it or maybe give it to my parents so they can get out easily/safely in the winter time storms up there in Cincy. The Accord the day after I bought it . . . Factory 6-speed short-throw transmission.  With the V6 (244hp under the new SAE rating system) it'll do 0-60 in 5.9s — if you can get traction.  That's about the high 250s to low 260s in HP under the old (pre 2007) SAE ratings.

I’m going to drive the Blazer a bit if I can, then look into a Toyota Tacoma or Jeep Wrangler.  I’ve X’d the Land Rover Discovery off my list due to their inherent reliability issues.   The Jeep is leading since it’s more economical, even new.  I can’t hardly find an 05-08 Tacoma in the price I want to pay.  An ’05 Accesscab 4WD with the V6 and 6-speed manual is still getting $18,000 plus even with 100,000 miles on the odometer.  A new Wrangler is about $23,000 or so new, though they don’t usually deal much on them.  For some odd reason the insurance is cheaper too—go figure!

So after a long absence, my blog will reappear soon. For those who wondered where it went, sorry about the delay. Life was terribly hectic for the past few years and I never found time to put everything back.  It’ll be touch and go here for a while, but I plan on making this site flourish.

The first order of business is getting a proper custom template setup. That’s going to take a bit of time and work, so for now the stock template for WordPress will have to suffice.  Look for updates soon.
